How to Build a Gallery Wall That Looks Curated, Not Cluttered
Five prints, one palette, four simple steps. No design degree required.
A gallery wall is one of the fastest ways to completely change how a room feels. But there's a fine line between "curated collection" and "everything I own taped to a wall." The difference comes down to a few choices you make before anything goes up.
The 2026 approach is simpler than you might think: fewer prints, more breathing room, and one visual thread tying everything together. Here's how to do it — step by step.
1 Choose Your Prints (and Find the Thread)
Start with three to five pieces. That's it. The temptation is always to add more, but restraint is what makes a gallery wall look intentional rather than accidental.
The thread can be anything — a shared colour palette, a similar style, a consistent mood. It doesn't mean every print has to match; it means they need to feel like they belong in the same room.
For this wall, we used five prints that share warm, muted tones and a modern-organic mood:
Abstract Art Poster | Dream Create Inspire (the anchor) · Abstract Geometric Art | Striped Sphere Blue · Abstract Sun Horizon | Equilibrium Series · Romantic Illustration | Couple Embrace by Ocean · Cow Sketch Art | Minimalist Farmhouse
2 Pick an Anchor Piece
Every good gallery wall has one print that's noticeably larger than the rest. This is your anchor — it draws the eye first, sets the tone, and gives the arrangement a visual centre of gravity.
Choose the piece with the strongest colour or composition and size it up — roughly 30–40% larger than the others. Position it slightly off-centre rather than dead in the middle for a more dynamic, professional look.
3 Get the Spacing Right
This is where most gallery walls fall apart. Too tight and the prints crowd each other; too wide and they stop reading as a group.
The sweet spot is 5–8 cm (2–3 inches) between each piece, and keep that gap consistent across the entire arrangement. Use a ruler or a piece of card cut to your chosen width — hold it between prints while positioning and you'll nail it every time.
Hang the centre of the arrangement at eye level — about 145–150 cm (57–59 inches) from the floor. If it's above a sofa or console, leave 15–20 cm between the furniture and the lowest print.
4 Step Back and Check
Before committing, lay the prints on the floor in front of the wall. Arrange, rearrange, photograph it with your phone, step away for ten minutes, then come back. What looks right on the floor almost always looks right on the wall.
Once it feels balanced, mark the positions and go. A curated wall doesn't need to be perfect — it needs to feel intentional.
Quick Reference
How many prints: 3–5 for most walls. One anchor, the rest supporting.
Spacing: 5–8 cm (2–3 in) between every piece, consistent throughout.
Height: Centre of the arrangement at 145–150 cm (57–59 in) from the floor.
Above furniture: Keep 15–20 cm between the furniture top and the lowest print.
The one rule: Share a visual thread — colour, mood, or style — across every piece.
